councils of the Church
   This term (from the Latin concilium, meaning "meeting") refers to an assembly of bishops and otherChurch leaders. The tradition of holding councils began with the Apostles in Jerusalem (see Acts 15:1-35) and continues to the present. (See CCC 880)
